How To Choose Correct Lug Bolts

In this guide, we'll explore the key factors to consider when choosing lug bolts. Here's what you need to know:

A Guide to Choosing the Correct Lug Bolts

Lug bolts are the fasteners that secure your wheels to the hub of your vehicle. Choosing the correct lug bolts involves considering various factors to ensure a proper fit and reliable performance. In this guide, we'll explore the key factors to consider when choosing lug bolts. Here's what you need to know:

1. Thread Size and Pitch:
The thread size and pitch of the lug bolts must match the threads on your vehicle's wheel studs. Measure the diameter and pitch of the existing wheel studs carefully to ensure compatibility. Choosing the wrong thread size or pitch can lead to improper fitment and potential safety hazards.

Thread Size: Thread size refers to the nominal diameter of the threaded portion of the fastener. We measure thread size in MM.

Thread Pitch: Thread pitch refers to the distance between adjacent threads, measured along the length of the fastener.

An example of thread size for lug bolts commonly used on vehicles is M12x1.5.

"M12" denotes the thread size, indicating that the diameter of the threaded portion of the lug bolt is 12 millimeters.
"1.5" indicates the thread pitch, meaning there is a distance of 1.5 millimeters between adjacent threads along the length of the lug bolt.
2. Seat Type:
Conical Seat: Also known as tapered seat, these lug bolts have a conical shape that matches the angle of the wheel's lug holes. Conical seats are the most common type.
Ball Seat: Ball seat lug bolts have a rounded or spherical seating area that matches the shape of the wheel's lug holes. They provide full contact and are commonly used in aftermarket wheels, especially those from European manufacturers.

3. Length and Width:
Choose lug bolts with the appropriate length and width for your wheels. The length should allow the lug bolts to fully engage with the wheel studs without bottoming out. Ensure that the width of the lug bolts matches the thickness of the mounting surface of your wheels for a secure fit.

Shank Length: Shank length is the measurement from the end of the threads to the bottom of the seat. It is NOT the entire length of the bolt including the seat.

4. Material and Finish:
Our lug bolts are made of steel material. We offer the standard black and chrome finish as well as hundreds of powder coating color options. Custom colors available. We'll order your custom powder and powder the lug bolts in house.

5. Torque Specifications:
Follow the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications when tightening lug bolts. Over-tightening or under-tightening can lead to issues like uneven wear, vibrations, and wheel detachment. Use a torque wrench to achieve the proper torque settings and ensure consistent and uniform tightening.

At Venum Wheel, we offer a wide selection of high-quality lug bolts to suit many vehicle makes and models, ensuring you find the perfect fit for your wheels. Upgrade with confidence, knowing that your wheels are securely fastened for every journey.
